Team History
While the History of Ultimate shows that the game evolved from being played at Amherst College and the Mount Hermon summer school, Dave Chaiken wants the world to know about Brooklyn’s contribution.

A decade after the Columbia High School kids wrote down the sport’s first rules, Chaiken and his Brooklyn boys were one of the first club teams in the nation, taking on New York’s Heifers, Boston Aerodisc and Connecticut’s Dukes in the late 1970s and early 80s.

More than a quarter century later, Chaiken is back at UPA Nationals and ready to challenge for his third Masters championship with a New York-based team.

Above & Beyond is the first-year brainchild of Dave Fausel and Joe McHugh. The team includes a mix of former New York, New York vets like Aram and Juano Flores, Dave “Babs” Babkow and Andy Scheman; homegrown Brooklyn boys like Adam Pacelli, Nick Mahedy, Billy Seto, Lev Fruchter and Chaiken; a New Paltz posse of Marty Giannukos, Brian Mahoney and Mark “Rosie” Rosenthal; and Adam Zagoria, one of two Crugers, N.Y., kids in the Masters bracket. (See Philly’s Old Sag for “Big” Steve Leshinkski.)

Some guys on the squad have six Open rings, others are making their first Nationals appearance. Most are just hoping they can get through the weekend with a good buzz and no major injuries.
