Thursday's games to watch:
Round 1: The reward for the one seed is to play Annapolis All-Stars in the first game. This may be Shazam's biggest challenge all day, especially if it's windy. Look for Shazam to have first game jitters, but to pull it out in the second half. In the B pool, Chad Larson Experience matches up against B+. This may be close to start, but B+'s superior athleticism and ability to take care of the disc will win them the game. Pool C's game between Holes and Poles and Duff could be close if the wind is light; but if it's breezy or dewy, HnP runs away with it.
Round 2: Pool A will feature an interesting matchup between Annapolis All-Stars and 6 Trained Monkeys. This will be the Monkeys' debut against a contender. Both are ringer teams with loosely structured offense, but AAS has played together more. Once again, wind will be a factor - if the Monkeys can get their deep game going, watch out. But if the wind is high, AAS comes out on top. In Pool B, Chad Larson Experience could upset Bad Larry through hard-running man defense. If CLX can shut down the top go-tos on Bad Larry, they'll challenge BL enough to make a game of it. But if the wind is high or CLX comes out flat, Bad Larry will win going away.
Round 3: This is always the best round of day one, and all four pools feature exciting matchups. Look for the upset in Pool C, as Brass Monkey's superior depth and athleticism will give them the edge over Holes and Poles. The game between B+ and Bad Larry will also be close; Bad Larry will be tired out after CLX and won't have an answer for the athletes on B+. In Pool A, 6 Trained Monkeys has a chance for a huge upset over Shazam, but unless Shazam loses confidence, they'll win by four or five. Drive Through Liquor will make a run at Red Fish Blue Fish in Pool D, but the Fish know how to play on Thursday, and DTL will be disappointed. Look for the minor upset in Pool D of Hot Action over Soul Patrol. Finally, Universe will make a run at Duff, and Duff will have to shake off the earlier losses; if there's any negative energy, they'll lose to the Carleton alum team. |
