Team History
Although New Jersey has served as an important setting in the history of ultimate, its contribution to the national club scene was long hindered by the lack of a true urban center. After years of fielding hungry teams but failing to advance beyond Regionals, a core group of players from Havoc (NJ) combined with Black & Gold (Pittsburgh, PA) in 2000, seeking to forge an elite team. The team’s performance that season yielded promising signs of things to come. Re-named Pike in 2001, the team retained a core group of Pittsburgh players but reverted to a largely NJ-based roster. Its 4th-place finish at Regionals was a new high-water mark for this generation of players. In 2002, Pike welcomed a group of talented players from Philadelphia along with several Jersey boys returning to their roots. This team took another step forward by securing a bid to Nationals, bridging a 20-year gap with the NJ teams that competed for titles in the early 1980’s. Since then, Pike has continued to expand and develop its talent base by drawing players from across NJ, PA, MD, and NYC. Despite changes in personnel, the team has kept a firm grip on its core philosophies and strategies, and used each new season to build seamlessly on the previous one. No longer flying under the radar, Pike is making its third consecutive trip to the UPA Championships. With its deepest, most experienced roster yet, Pike arrives in Florida with its sights set firmly on the big prize.
