Quarters: The best game of the round is Backhoe versus Fury, Backhoe scores the first point on Fury with their fast-running O. Backhoe plays hard man D with a great force middle. Fury, knowing Backhoe likes to put it, goes straight up. Backhoe puts it anyway, but there are defenders there. Fury has some bad decisions but scores anyway; they put a zone on, get the turn quickly, and score again. Fury's offense looks good and patient, and they're hitting every one of the seven players. But Backhoe is making them work for it. Fury goes up on Backhoe 4-1 and it seems like it'll be a blowout. The next points are long and full of turnovers. Backhoe's defense looks strong but they have trouble after forcing the turn, breathing hard in the stack. Some players come up big for them - Katy Harris (#4) as a receiver, Molly Doyle (#82) on D, and Jessi Witt (#9) with big throws. Backhoe brings it back and from there it's close, with both teams going on little runs but never pulling away. Backhoe has the lead at 12-11, capped at 14. Gwen Ambler (#5), who has been big for Fury all weekend, forces one to Julie Baker (#11), and Denise Cunningham (#10) gets the D. Doyle picks up but has no cutters and her throw is D'd. Jody Dozono (#24) throws a quick pass to Kirsten Unfried (#3) and it's tied, 12-12. The next point is full of turnovers. Frannie Goodrich (#34) has an unmarked huck to Doyle, which she is unable to hold on to. Beth Stagner (#12) gets the D back for Backhoe, but throws it away. Then Samantha Salvia (#18) on Fury has it about 20 yards out on the line, throws a goal, called back on a stall. The stall is contested, she throws it again, it's called back again. This time she calls foul, so the stall comes in at 6. Doyle is marking, standing far enough away so there's no contact, and counts from 6 to 10 while the Fury cutters are unable to get open. She calls stall, but Salvia called fast count earlier and Doyle didn't drop the count (the observer was there and makes the call). Doyle comes in at 8, Salvia puts up a crossfield flick to the corner for Ambler, but it's trailing away. Ambler lays out, can't make the grab, and comes up limping. After the substitution, Backhoe hucks it deep, turnover. Fury has the disc near their own endzone. The thrower tries to dump, but Doyle is there for a huge layout D. Backhoe finally calls timeout. Four passes later, they score, and it's 13-12, game point for Backhoe.
Backhoe's force middle defense has been giving Fury trouble all game. Their defenders are right with the Fury cutters, and Fury has been impatient and careless with the disc. Fury turns it over close to their own goalline and Stagner has the disc and a wide-open woman in the back of the endzone. But the receiver can't hold on to Stagner's hammer, and Fury works it quickly down the field for the score. 13-13, double game point. Many other upsets have fallen short at this point. Fury is pulling for the game, and they trust their defense to force the turn. Backhoe receives and gets it to Witt, about 50 yards away from the endzone. Witt lets one of her huge backhands fly, and it's a one-on-one with Doyle and a shorter woman. Doyle missed one earlier, but this is game point. She goes up big for the two-handed grab, comes down with it, and Backhoe's going to semis.
Rare Air versus Riot is close to start. Rare Air plays hard man defense, and they force some turns against Riot. Riot's D seems more contain than aggressive, and the score is 2-2 at the beginning. Rare Air makes some errors, turning it over long. Riot seems to get their offense in order, and they score three points in a row quickly to make it 5-2. Riot has some great long throwers and they play very patient endzone offense. At this tournament they are playing mistake-free ultimate. Rare Air is a good, fast-running team, but they turn it over too much to compete with Riot. Riot runs away with it.
Godiva goes up 4-2 on Ozone. Godiva players are open on Ozone, but their players make some errors on offense. Ozone defense is good, and they have good marks, but they turn it over too much. Godiva's deep game is going well for them, and they get up 6-3. Godiva then throws a four person cup zone defense that Ozone has trouble with. Godiva goes up 7-3. Ozone makes a run of it in the second half, but ultimately can't overcome the deficit. Godiva wins 15-10.
Prime versus Schwa is extremely lopsided. Schwa has some miscues in the middle of the field, and Prime's spread offense is clicking. Schwa is also have some internal troubles, going negative on one another. Prime goes up 8-2 and wins big.
Semis: Riot has played Backhoe before at this tournament and knows their style of play. Backhoe is feeling great after their win and had Riot at 8s last time. Backhoe comes out strong with their aggressive man defense, and it's not looking as easy for Riot. Nevertheless, the Seattle team has patient throwers and great, speedy cutters. They are capable of mistake-free ultimate, while Backhoe is not known for taking care of the disc. Riot goes up 4-1, mainly by turning it over less. Then Backhoe gets a couple breaks, with Riot starting to force it. The points are long and there are lots of overthrows. Backhoe brings it to 5-3, and the score stays that close for a while. At 10-8, Riot goes on a run. Backhoe has some easy drops, but mainly Riot is simply playing too well, with successful long throws and great breaks from the handlers. The final is 15-8.
Godiva gets down early to Prime; Prime is playing great defense, and their offense is finally working well. The spread offense opens up cutters both away and underneath. Godiva has great team defense, but can't seem to win the one-on-one matchups with Prime's receivers. Erin Huck (#16) scores at will, regardless of where her D is. Valerie Dion (#66) also comes up big for Prime, both on offense and defense. And Leslie Calder (#7) has some great layout defense. Prime goes up 5-1 and Godiva takes a timeout. Their offense is reset and they start the hard work of slowly coming back. Prime makes some errors and Godiva capitalizes, not allowing Prime a second chance. Nurit Bloom (#27) and Victoria Chow (#29) are moving the disc well for the Boston squad. Godiva brings it back to 6-5 and now it's Prime's turn to take a time out. After turnovers by both teams, Prime scores to make it 7-5. Godiva receives, moves it down the field, and then throws it out of bounds. Prime gives it back, but then Dion has a big layout D for Prime. Prime hucks it to Huck to take half 8-5.
Godiva continues to have trouble to start the second half, and Prime continues to capitalize. Their defense makes life hard for Godiva's cutters. At 11-7, Prime turns it over and Godiva walks it in for the score. Godiva sets a zone after the pull, and Prime doesn't move well against it. There are lots of passes but Godiva contains. The disc doesn't get very far downfield. Prime has a miscue, Godiva gets a short field, turn, Prime turn, Godiva score. Godiva has made it close; it's 11-9. Prime receives and works it, then overthrows Calder, who has a nice layout but can't hold on. Godiva makes it all the way down to the other end with easy passes and breaks, but there's a miscue in the endzone and it's a Godiva turnover. Godiva sets the zone and it looks good at first, but Prime puts up some away looks along the line, Jill Calkin (#19) has a nice grab, and Prime scores. 12-9. Godiva receives, moves it downfield, and hucks - a good look, but overthrown. Prime gives it right back on the goalline and Godiva scores. 12-10. But on the next point, Prime moves it downfield well and puts a nice away pass to an open receiver, who misreads. Godiva's disc. The first pass is to a cutter from the back, and Calder makes a chest-high layout D. Prime puts it in for the easy score. Godiva works it again, hucks it again, and Dominique Fontinette (#12) skies Dion for the goal. 13-11. But at this point the game is capped at 14. Prime throws it away and it seems like Godiva has a chance, close to the endzone. Bloom has the disc, nice pass, called back for a contested stall. Bloom's disc again and she throws the easy dump, called back for violation. She then throws the inside out to Chow, who drops it. Prime picks it up, hucks it, and the receiver makes a nice read to win the game. 14-11 Prime.
